Recent Work

A quick look at recent work from the past few years.

Painting: Beaver-Meadow

Beaver Meadow – YO

Acrylic paint on canvas board, mounted, 14 x 11 inches, 2023 • AVAILABLE

First of five painting explorations using three colors plus white. Ultramarine blue and raw umber were two constants, plus an oxide or hooker’s green. Summer photos of beaver activity in Pawtuckaway State were a jumping off point. YO refers to yellow oxide.

Painting: Beaver-Lodge

Beaver Lodge – HG

Acrylic paint on canvas board, mounted, 7 x 5 inches, 2023 • AVAILABLE

One of five painting explorations using three colors plus white. Ultramarine blue and raw umber were two constants, plus an oxide or hooker’s green. Summer photos of beaver activity in Pawtuckaway State were a jumping off point. HG refers to Hooker’s Green.

Garden Circle Flowers – End of Day

Oil paint on canvas, 20 x 16 inches, 2024

The garden circle has Rudbeckia and Russian sage perennials. The low summer sunlight shows off flowers and plants in a special way against deepening shadows. This painting is documentation of my own garden joy.

Garden Hawk

Hawk in Garden

Oil paint on canvas, 14 x 18 inches, 2024 • AVAILABLE

One late day in October, the garden was dried out and quiet in tawny colors. A Cooper’s Hawk looked up from its resting perch as I looked down from height of the nearby parking lot.

Garden 2025 – Brussels

Acrylic paint on canvas, 18 x 24 inches, 2025

Brussel sprouts are growing in buckets in the foreground.

Garden 2025 – Zinnia Patch End of Day

Acrylic paint on canvas, 24 x 30 inches, 2025

I always plant plenty of zinnias, this year in a large patch. The highlighted flowers seem active despite the late time of day. Quirky garden details like stones and a hanging grow bag keep it real and amusing.

Happy Gardener

Acrylic paint on paper, framed, 34 x 42 inches, 2025 • AVAILABLE

My aim here was to paint very large using heavy drawing paper from a big roll. The foreground figure is the main event. Acrylic paint on paper means the work has to finish in just a few sessions.

Water the Zinnias

Acrylic paint on paper, framed, 16 x 20 inches, 2025 • AVAILABLE

The foreground figure is as important as the larger garden view. Acrylic paint on paper means the work has to finish in just a few sessions.

Watering the Kale

Acrylic paint on paper, framed, 16 x 20 inches, 2025 • AVAILABLE

The foreground figure is as important as the larger garden view. Acrylic paint on paper means the work has to finish in just a few sessions.

Sheep-dog trials, Blue Hill Fair

Acrylic paint on paper, mounted, 15.5 x 9.5 inches, 2022

Independent Street, Sunday Morning

Acrylic paint on canvas, 24 x 18 inches, 2023 • AVAILABLE

This view is from Liberty Street looking down Independent Street to Water Street. Brilliant light and shadow emerge on a summery morning when the sky is almost done clearing out from morning fog. The short side street has American flags and other charms. Deep shadows in the street are cast by the Tannery building.

Charles Street Look to Yellow House, Water Street

Acrylic paint on paper, 23 x 18 inches, 2023 • AVAILABLE

Three Flags – Lime Street

Acrylic paint on canvas pad sheet, mounted, 16 x 12 inches, 2023 • AVAILABLE

This view down Lime Street towards Water Street, three American flags, and distant river made an irresistible subject one Fourth of July weekend. The masts from the boatyard add character in the neighborhood.

OutWaterSt,

Out Water Street – C Tree

Acrylic paint on canvas pad sheet, mounted, 16 x 12 inches, 2023 • AVAILABLE

This is a favorite, opening view on walks, heading towards Joppa Park along the Merrimack River. The big area of sky and distant river make the first impact.  Then nearer details charm with light, shadow, and life in the South End neighborhood.

Red House – Rolfe’s Lane

Acrylic paint on canvas pad sheet, mounted 20 x 17 inches, 2023 • AVAILABLE

The Red House sits at the “city” end of the Plum Island Turnpike along the Merrimack River. Late afternoon light at the end of summer created the commanding, long side view of the old building. The road continues on towards the local airport, salt marshes, and beaches.

Lime Street Intersection, Wintertime Walk

Oil paint on canvas, 24 x 18, 2023 • AVAILABLE

The skies are clearing and the light is brightening on a raw, late winter afternoon. The view is from Lime Street towards Water Street. The orange house at the Purchase Street intersection was the location for a neighborhood “pharmacy” in the bygone days. The river appears in the distance with a patch of color.

Lower Lime Street – Feb walk

Acrylic paint on canvas, 11 x 14 inches, 2025

On a mid-winter day, the moist grey-blue sky sets off a hint of color in tree tops. A blue patch of river is at the base of the street appears before the far shore.
