CYNTHIA KOWAL

ACRYLIC & OIL PAINTINGS

About

Cynthia Kowal retired from a professional career as a research administrator in fall 2022. A graduate of Antioch College, she pursued her interest in art by taking courses and workshops in color theory, drawing, painting, ceramics, and photography.  For many years, her productivity was oriented to collage and quilt making. In 2010, she returned to her early love of painting by joining the Alan Bull Studio as a student, and dedicated herself to painting regularly in oils and acrylics.

Painting has allowed her to be expressive and focused, to work with direct action, and demonstrate progression.  Paintings reflect a colorist’s sensibility, an idea of place and emotion, and seasonal conditions. Many portraits of humans and animals serve as metaphors for commentary on her workplace experience. Her output reflects her enjoyment of living in Newburyport, including portraits, animals, street scenes, landscapes, beaver lodges, and maritime subjects.
